Charles E. Whilden worked for the Commissary Department of the U.S. Army in Indian Territories. During the Civil War he was a Confederate soldier in the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Regiment, one of the regiments which made up Gregg's Brigade (later known as McGowan's Brigade).
